Well whenever we put our money in sports memorabilia, we certainly don't have an idea to which extent the price can go up or in other case can go down.

Well whenever we put our money in sports memorabilia, we certainly don't have an idea to which extent the price can go up or in other case can go down.

Appraisal is a must for the serious sports collector. People have been sorely disappointed because they didn't get their items appraised for value and then sold them for a fraction of their worth.

Some of the places one should check for appraisals of sports memorabilia includes:

1.) AllAuthentic Sports Memorabilia-professionals who can provide references and offer instant appraisals

2.) Vintage Sports Memorabilia Appraisals-has a sports artifacts library for thousands of vintage sports items, prefers email requests limited to two items, nothing newer than 1980.

3.) Krause Standard Catalog of Sports Memorabilia Price Guide

4.) Robert Connelly This person is well known for the clinics on appraisals. As a member of the famous American Society of Appraisers he was honored very well by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

5.) The American Legends They provide paid appraisals. It was founded in the year 1992.

6.) Sports Memorabilia Appraisal Expert Witness-Provides 800 #, volunteer's background information to help give reference to its value as an appraisal business.

Although there is much importance of appraisal for resale value, but still you may get insurance for your valuables. Even the insurance companies wouldn't make out the value until or unless you've had an appraisal. You need to make sure that the proof you are providing is documented.

There is a Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice which is recognized in courts and acceptable to banks, insurance companies, auction houses, and the IRS.

Its better to avoid being dependant on any sports shop you come across. Instead, you should set your standards, and do some prior research in this regard. You should also, consider that if you are paying for more than one opinion is totally worthwhile only if a lot of money is involved in it, provided it gives you the ultimate peace of mind. Since the process usually changes, you should regularly update your selling price for before selling them. Also keep in mind that the retired players mostly hold their value far better as their professional status won't change any more.

A good practice in selling is to make sure that you are selling your valuables to the right person/business. You should also know that the dealer doesnt usually pay you your asked amount. Some negotiations have to be done in a professional way to close a deal successfully.

Sweat stains don't necessarily make a jersey authentic. Anyone can wear a jersey long enough to sweat in it and try to pass it off as the real thing. Watch for smudged autographs, dog-eared pages in books, worn edges on cards. An appraiser should be trained to notice small details that would decrease the value of your collector's item.

Grading is a system that is well known for trading cards. This is a mark of the quality of the card. A card which is graded has a guarantee of being bona fide. These cards are sealed packed so as to discourage the card switching system which is a cheap scheme of some sellers. An appraiser must know how to distinguish between the graded cards and the fake ones.

There came a point when my own daughter fell in to collect cards and with this she bought a box of cards that really made her felt good but soon she was deeply disappointed. The one card which was bonafide was the one which was at the front of box. Except for that all were just fake and not of any worth. So the point is to be aware of all the scams that may make you lose your hard earned money.
